Observing Herds

In the work we do we often observe herds of horses. As we bring a client up to meet a new herd we will ask them to observe the herd and their interactions. Are there appropriate levels of pressure used? What do their relationships look like? Are there any patterns? Often people will struggle with understanding how watching horses interact applies to them.

We find that observing relational patterns in others help us to recognize the patterns we hold in our own relationships. By starting by observing the external we can start the process of being able to filter through our own relational patterns and boundaries whether healthy or not.

Then the beauty of this work is we get to practice what we are intellectualizing about our relational patterns and actually practice something different in the moment. Within the bounds of the relationship with their horse, a safe place to be vulnerable and try something new. This is the sacred space of what we do!
